What Is Girls Guild About?
Girls Guild: Unleash Imaginative Play To Promote Academic Success And Self-Esteem. And It’s Fun and Free!
Dear Fellow Parent,
Thanks for checking out Girls Guild! Okay, so . . . what’s going on here?
In a nutshell, Girls Guild is a pretend secret society for girls (although boys can be honorary members!) dedicated to promoting literacy among girls worldwide.
The word “pretend” is important here because Girls Guild exists only in the imagination. There is no central organization. Nor are there dues, meetings to attend, or leaders. Plus real secret societies are spooky!
So what then, you may wonder, is the at the heart of Girls Guild? Well, like any good secret society, Girls Guild has an intriguing legend about how and why it was formed.
The story is available as a free e-book here. It’s based on the legend of Atlantis and involves a princess named Sophia who discovers that the island is sinking, but no one believes her because she is just a girl. I encourage you to read the story together with your child as a great way to get started!
Be A Part Of The Girls Guild Story
Once you have read the story together, the fun, interactive stuff starts — that is, your new Girls Guilder can enter into the stream of the Girls Guild story through various activities based on the legend. Some of these activities include
- A secret code your Girls Guilder will be using within minutes to create cool looking messages
- A secret handshake
- Passing out the free Girls Guild award cards to recognize peers for jobs well done (teachers love this one!)
- Putting (and spotting!) Girls Guild symbol stickers on car bumpers, back packs, lunch boxes — you name it (this is a favorite with my kids — every errand becomes a game of spot-the-girls-guild-symbol, and what a great ice-breaker it is for new friends, which is what this is all about!
- Reading one of the chapter books from Girls Guild series (I’m really excited about these — since Girls Guild goes back to ancient Atlantis, the chapter books will cover a wide range historic eras and events — if you are an author and would like to get in on the ground floor of the Girls Guild series, check out the authors page here! The first Girls Guild chapter book The Lost Book of Girls Guild will be coming online soon!)
- Sign up for a free membership to this site which will allow (with parental supervision, of course!) access to the Girls Guild bulletin board and newsletter.
A Worldwide Phenomenon
In the short time this site has been up it has already generated astonishing interest across the United States and the globe! Imagine how a Girls Guild t-shirt or button will add to the magic of a family trip to Disney World, say, or a foreign country as fellow Girls Guilders bound over and offer a friendly, secret handshake. Given the traffic this site has had, it won’t be long before you see those shirts and buttons everywhere, so get yours now here!
How Do I Start?
The best way to start is with the free (and not too long!) e-book, The Legend of Girls Guild, here or read it online here. After that, a really easy, inexpensive and fun way both to get the “feel” for what this is all about, and to help Girls Guilders connect, is to put a small Girls Guild sticker on your bumper — you will be surprised and delighted with the greetings this will generate. Get yours here.
Again, thank you so much for checking this out and welcome to Girls Guild!
P.S. It’s important that anyone who wants to join in the fun is able without regard to financial circumstances, and so all of the Girls Guild membership stuff — the legend e-book, the information about the the secret handshakes, etc., will always be free. Also, the Girls Guild gear like stickers, shirts, buttons, etc., available at the Girls Guild Online Store have a low mark up to cover the costs associated with this site. P.P.S. One more thing — grown-ups can be Girls Guilders too — What a great mother-daughter (or grandmother-mother-daughter!) activity the Girls Guild would be! You will see some of that mother-daughter Girls Guilder stuff in the free chapter e-book The Lost Book of Girls Guild available here.
